Them asking you for your grades specifically and not just “how’s school going?” sounds like a control issue on your parents part. If you’re in college, then you are an adult with your own life to worry about and you will deal with the consequences of your own actions. You are out of the house and your parents aren’t your caretakers anymore. While I would recommend keeping your grades up for your own sake, it’s really none of your parents’ business what your specific grades are. Even asking in a funny way can still be controlling, and might be their way of masking that they are being controlling. I’d say lying isn’t ethically wrong in a situation like this. If you are passing your classes, they won’t know. But you may get caught if you’re failing your classes and don’t graduate on time or get dropped from your program.

Home Improvement@lemmy.world•House settling- how to repair sump drain?
2·3 months agoIf it’s just a little bit off, you can use a heat gun to heat the PVC until it is a little bit bendable. Then you can gently bend it into shape so it connects to the spot you need it to. Just make sure to heat the pipe evenly from all sides and don’t kink the pipe when you bend it.
This isn’t considered verification in the UK from what I can tell. Companies are now implementing AI face scans, ID checks and credit card verification to comply with the UK law. I’m not a lawyer or even British, but it wouldn’t make sense to me that companies would spend money to turn away their UK customers otherwise.
This is literally happening. Without getting too specific so her job stays safe, my sister works as an ocean researcher for the government. They removed any mention of the word “diversity” and “biodiversity” from their research and so far, they haven’t lost their jobs yet.

Autism@lemmy.world•Need noise cancelling headphones recommendationsEnglish
1·2 years agoBose does make really good NC headphones, but as you mentioned, they can be pricy. I got my NC 700s on Facebook marketplace for half the price brand new. Someone was given them from work, but already had Sony noise cancelling headphones and were selling the Bose ones. I see used QC45s on there all the time too.

15·2 years agoYou might have trouble getting free unrestricted library cards if you don’t live in the area that the library serves. They are usually paid for with taxes and aren’t there to serve people outside their community.
If you’re willing to pay for it, I know that the Ottawa Public Library in Canada offers membership for $90/year to people living outside Ottawa. You may find something similar at other libraries.
The Libraries and Archives of Canada will issue a card too, but you have to visit the archives in person and have a reason you are using the archives and not another library.

Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•Caps(?) for upside-down galvanized fence?
1·2 years agoI’m no fence installer or anything so I don’t know if it’s possible, but instead of replacing the fence, could the chain link part be removed from the posts and flipped over and reinstalled?
That depends on your goal. If you want something free, open source and self-hosted then Plex isn’t the best option and you’d do better to look at Jellyfin or Kodi.

Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•Running Electrical Wire through insulation
3·2 years agoMake sure you’re buying 14/2 or 12/2 that has a ground wire and running that back to the breaker box. I saw the job you did with the big cable in the floor and it didn’t look like you ran a new cable that had a ground wire. It’s best to replace the old shoddy stuff with circuits that are up to code, even if you’re doing it DIY and your area doesn’t require homeowners to get it inspected. The codes are designed to prevent fires and loss of life.

Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•Fished new wire for the first time!
3·2 years agoYou can mark it either red or black, but you already have one black wire, so it would be best to mark it red, just to differentiate it.

Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•Fished new wire for the first time!
9·2 years agoSince you went with 10/2 for a 240v outlet that means your cable will have two hots and a single ground. But the cable you bought will have a black, white and bare/green wire. Make sure that you wrap both ends of the white conductor with red electrical tape to indicate that it is also a hot wire. White normally indicates a neutral, but since you won’t have a neutral wire in this cable, it’s important to mark it. Otherwise someone else may work on this outlet in the future, see a white wire, assume it’s a neutral, wire something up with it as a neutral, and give themselves a pretty bad shock.

Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•Need help identifying type of 240 wires
13·2 years agoIf you’re in North America, which I assume you are based on the 120v wires, then your assumption about 240v power is a bit off. Both wires can be a hot (120v) wire, 180° out of phase from each other, so they add to 240v. In this case, a neutral wire isn’t necessary to carry the current back, the other hot wire does that. A neutral wire may be used, but then there would be 4 wires.
The ground wire and the neutral wire actually connect to each other in the panel, but it’s not safe to use a ground wire in place of a neutral, so definitely don’t wire it to the neutral on the outlet.
If you are unsure of what’s going on with this set of wires, you should really call an electrician to help. Wiring a standard 120v outlet is something a homeowner can do, but identifying an old 240v cable on a dubious circuit is definitely something a qualified electrician should do.
Don’t AI models need to be trained on the material they are trying to emulate?
Not every package that comes with xfce has a name that starts with xfce4, just most of them do. You may need to identify and remove other packages too.
I think the meme is referring to the first vowel.
I think that: sudo apt purge xfce4* sudo apt autoremove
should do it.
I’ll point out that the other answers here are also correct. It depends on how you want to clean it from your system.
“apt remove” will only remove the packages, not the config files
“apt purge” will remove the packages and config files
“apt autoremove” will clean up the orphaned dependencies
“xfce4” will only remove the DE
“xfce4*” will remove the DE and most of the other packages that come with xfce
