An old fashioned meme but it checks out

Understanding it needed to do that is a bit of personification. The Venus fly trap that grew a slightly taller flower stem got pollinated more. That genetic mutation overtook the species as competition for pollination grew more difficult for the shorter flower stemmed. Evolution is cool an all, but let’s not confuse it for plants knowing or deciding to do anything.

I get it, I walked into the den and poked the bear. But I think a reality check for this kind of “Linux will take over Microsoft” is necessary. 95% of computer users don’t care about their OS and would never imagine re-installing it or installing a different one. Just the idea of thinking about an OS puts that person in the advanced user category. It took Google to mod Linux and sell it to every public school in America to get it to a 4% user base. It is clearly not something for everyone, it isn’t even for most people who use Reddit or Lemmy, and those communities are def more closely representative of people capable of using Linux.
I understand that there have been many advances to make it a usable OS for the casual person. But it isn’t. Sure, your mom might be able to use it “out of the box” but it doesn’t come in a box. The two widely adopted versions of Linux had to be heavily modified by large dev teams of Valve and Google, for very limited numbers of devices. Would Valve make a version for a non-gaming focused device, or computer at large? Would Google make a version that wasn’t in direct support of Googles products? I doubt it.
It isn’t just lack of knowledge of Linux that is holding it back. Its main demographic is nerdy computer people who are willing to, occasionally, run a shell command or hunt down the necessary things to get their webcam to work. That isn’t what Microsoft aims for, they aim for the average computer user who wants to watching videos, play games, browse the web and check their emails without thinking about any part of how or why it works.
I appreciate the enthusiasm Linux fanboys have about this. But ain’t nobody but the most tech savvy would even consider it.
Linux is not consumer friendly, it typically involves putting in a shit load of effort to get working with your hardware, the ones that don’t still need a ton of work to make “Windows-like” and compatibility is always going to be an issue.
Yes, there have been a ton of strides toward this dream situation. But without financial incentive, making things user-friendly isn’t going to happen. In fact, much of the Linux community prides themselves on having a “difficult” OS.
Once Linux can, by default, have an easy to use interface, can natively run Android apps and windows applications, and can work with a huge range of hardware, it will never take off. Linux might get a few points of market share due to some business applications finding Linux a better option than updating HW and windows build, but those companies are going to struggle and will be even more dependent on their IT staff for the simplest of things.
It does leave ambiguity with it being an, apparent, quote/dialogue. Correct and Incorrect are both correct depending on your POV and how you interpret social media posts
Ballistic_86@lemmy.worldto Memes@lemmy.ml•Last one, i've been farming Ai for memes but last one with lore9·1 year agoI think it is interesting to point out that AI will be good, maybe too good. It isn’t right now, it’s a novelty in the early stages of such mass adoption that a lot of the consequences are just starting to appear.
The phones owned by Gen A in 40 years will have a useful, realistic, and default AI assistant. It just sucks that the development of this technology is only driven by late-stage capitalism.
I mean, it wouldn’t be like they waste any time, lol
Ballistic_86@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•Boeing whistleblower John Barnett died by suicide, police investigation concludes10·1 year agoThe bullet that killed him matched the gun in his hand, like okay that’s fair. But they use that as the justification for suicide. Like, of course if you want someone to look like they killed themselves you would use a gun and place it in their hand. Didn’t we learn about this kind of basic subterfuge in our teenage years watching TV/Movies.
Whistleblowers risk their entire reputations and careers in the pursuit of doing the right thing and stopping corporations from committing crimes. Isn’t that the opposite of wanting to kill yourself? Courage in the face of tremendous opposition??
Sure, by the unrealistic standards late-stage capitalism Apple is falling behind. But in the scheme of things, they are still one of the most profitable/successful companies. They still have enough money to keep innovation, development, and their retail spaces open.
There are successful companies that make a single product, and have been doing so for 50 years. I wish the view on companies would shift back to that being more the norm.

Have lost family members to it and my father is currently been on them for years. I tried to get him on the THC train, he even has a medical card, but he claims to not like the effects. I live in a recently legal state so I’m waiting until I can show him a store with a wide variety to try. I know there is some strain that will help with his pain and suffering without the effects he didn’t like.
Ballistic_86@lemmy.worldto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•The way my daughter's middle school health class classifies drugs is insane.English163·1 year agoThe “gateway” drug thing was taught to me through DARE in the 90s. But has been confirmed propoganda for decades. Calling Cannabis (marijuana is not the proper name) a “gateway” drug is like saying water or air are “gateway” drugs. Sure, a crack head has probably smoked weed, but that isn’t what got them into crack.
I would guess that these materials are, either, very old or they categorize cannabis differently because it is so common. It doesn’t help that it is illegal in half the country and legal in the other half. So any state with cannabis not, at least, decriminalized will still have the talking points for the 1930s.
Tryna strike a chord and it’s probly A MINOR
In this particular situation, Harambe was causing harm to the child, more of a curiosity but with a very strong and less dexterous creature. I don’t think a wild animal should be held accountable for being themselves. So his death is still bullshit.
There is another example of a child falling into a gorilla enclosure and a female gorilla protected the child from the other gorillas until the zoo staff arrived.
Most males in the animal kingdom are, at best, indifferent to children of other males/species. At worst, they actively kill babies from other males.

Ballistic_86@lemmy.worldto Gaming@lemmy.ml•Don't say Manor Lords was made by a 'solo developer,' argues competing city builder maker: 'The team size on it is maybe even larger than ours'8·1 year agoI’m really loving Manor Lords but my first “good” playthrough is coming to an end and I’ll take a break until more content is added. Once you learn all of the game mechanics, building a thriving economy is really easy.
I picked up the game for $30, it will keep getting better, and some day I’ll have an amazing game that I got for pretty cheap. This isn’t my first early-access experience, and most of the games I’ve gotten have been a success. Subnautica, Oxygen Not Included, The Forest, Astroneers. Im sure there are more on that list, just a few off the top of my head.
I don’t much care about the semantics. It isn’t just one person making the game, but it is one persons vision and it is a good one.
Ballistic_86@lemmy.worldto Music@lemmy.world•How are musicians supposed to survive on $0.00173 per stream?English161·1 year agoRecord companies have been stealing artist record sales for 70 years. This is nothing new to musical artists. The motivation to get on a streaming service is so sell tickets to your tour shows. Inflated album prices of the 90s made very few artists any money.
Streaming was never going to be profitable, it was the only option the music industry had to make any kind of money over piracy.
Most artists are happy to be making nothing on streaming, because giving access to your recorded music sells tickets. Tour tickets sales and merch has been the bread and butter for the musical artist for decades and remains the primary source of income.
You should just tell them you are not good at flirting and be more direct. It has worked very well for me. You can also work on getting a bit better by just doing so under the context that you are bad and it can be something funny between you and your match/potential partner.
