BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most unexpectedly useful item you've ever bought under $20?English2·7 days agoPut a drink in your cup that you hate, that way you’ll be reluctant to drink it as frequently. So if you hate pineapple juice, fill it up with that!
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•Is the Steam Deck getting outdated soon? Should I wait for the next gen?English2·13 days agoSame, the last roughly 40 hours of my gameplay on the Deck have been PS1/2 and Xbox games, with a few hours of New Vegas sprinkled in.
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It's Father's Day in the United States. What is a memory of your father that left the greatest impact on your life?English8·24 days agoMy dad wasn’t perfect, but he always did what was best for my mom and I. He worked his ass off doing a number of labor jobs (carpentry, mechanic, electrical, plumbing, etc) and was a jack of all trades. He dropped out his sophomore year in the 70s to help support his parents when his dad had a stroke and just kept working the labor jobs. He was well known enough in the plumbing business that when Disney was planning another hotel they asked for him by name to lead the plumbing project.
When all that hard labor caught up with him and he had his back surgery, it threw him on his ass and disability. He still kept working on stuff after recovering, rebuilt his uncle’s Willy’s he had found, swapping motors out of his truck when he eventually killed it, doing home renovations, everything. All while trying to teach my dumbass some of what he knew so I’d know something useful. I learned a lot from him, but not nearly all of what he knew. He was a stubborn hard ass so he liked things done a certain way and would sometimes get frustrated if I wasn’t doing it right, but never in a “I’m going to scream at you because you fucked up” kinda way.
It took me until he was diagnosed with cancer to realize why he had always been a hard ass and pushing me to do better, he didn’t want me to follow his footsteps and he stuck doing these hard labor jobs, destroying my body like he did his. Sorry that didn’t work out, old man.
It’s not really a particular memory of my dad that impacted me, it’s basically his whole memory of him that did. I’ve had lots of great memories with him, but everything he always did was for his family first, he was very selfless. I wouldn’t be who I am today without my dad.
Happy father’s day, dad. Miss you.
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Nintendo@lemmy.world•Target Leaves Dozens Of Switch 2 Consoles Locked In A Cage On The Store FloorEnglish3·1 month agoI might’ve unintentionally over exaggerated what I meant, edited my comment. I meant bricking as in how Xbox would ban your console for cheating or modding them forcing it as an offline only system, not making them a paperweight. That’s my bad
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Nintendo@lemmy.world•Target Leaves Dozens Of Switch 2 Consoles Locked In A Cage On The Store FloorEnglish11·1 month agoLet’s assume you stole the Switch 2 early. To get this update, you’d be connecting it to the Internet. Nintendo has not only recently updated their TOS to state they can brick your console if they suspect you of pirating, but console manufacturers have been known to ban accounts
brickand or flag devices if they get connected before official launch. What will stop them from doing that immediately if you connect online before it’s release date? I’m sure they already know which serial numbers are green lit for people with early access and which aren’t. You won’t be worrying about a day 1 update because you probably won’t receive it, and you’ll be locked to whatever game you’re able to steal with it as long as it works offline.Your best option is try to flip it immediately to some other schmuck and hope wherever you post it doesn’t alert authorities to you or just get removed for being clearly stolen.
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Musk wants to leave politics because he’s tired of ‘attacks’ from the left: reportEnglish3·3 months agoAww little pissbaby snowflake getting sad? Did the meanie weenie wittle lefties hurt your wittle baby feelers? Wittle baby bitch sad he lost millions over a state court election and tesla stocks? Do you need your wittle tesla robot to give you your bottle? Did daddy trump not give you ice cream to make you feel better? Maybe get out of our government you unelected fascist fuck, go take a ride on your spacex rocket and hope your overworked and underpaid engineers put all the bolts in the ship
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Alternatives to Roku/AppleTV for Jellyfin ClientEnglish2·3 months agoAnd has reliability issues, I got one for my mom so she could use my Plex server, it died just outside of warranty. She didn’t use it often so it wasn’t used and abused, just stopped outputting video one day.
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•A list of PC ports, recompiles, fan games, and more that all work on Steam DeckEnglish7·3 months agoThey definitely should. The other day I was installing Need For Speed Underground on my EOS PC and of course it’s not on ProtonDB because it’s not on Steam, so I expected a headache.
Nope, added it to Steam and it just worked. No settings needed set at all. I’d love to add that info to the ProtonDB but can’t.
I’m a carrier for USPS, I have a guy on my route who often orders Volkswagen parts from all over Europe. One day he got a replacement subframe for one of his VW’s from Estonia and it arrived at our office pretty beat up. When he needed to sign for it he saw the condition and I told him that’s how we received it. The shipper sent it by just sticking the subframe in a box, no padding, no supports, just a cardboard box for a trip around the world. He obviously was upset and had another one sent as a replacement after filing a claim.
The replacement was packaged exactly the same, and luckily only slightly bent on arrival. The old one is still sitting in our office in limbo.
If you’re gonna ship something overseas or across town package that shit properly

BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is everyone using as a HTPC?English4·5 months agoRyzen 1200/GTX 960 small build running Linux Mint. There’s a UHD blu-ray drive in it as well with the custom firmware to rip disks. Media is stored on my NAS that handles Plex and transcoding. The parts were mostly old extras I had lying around, just needed the case, blu-ray drive and boot SSD. Oh and the like $20 wireless Logitech keyboard/track pad combo for control.
BigDaddySlim@lemmy.worldto Cars - For Car Enthusiasts@lemmy.world•What are your guy's dream car?English4·5 months agoEl Camino SS. I’m flexible on the year, I don’t mind the boxy look of the 80s models I just want that sweet ute style.
There was a very good condition one for sale near me a while back for $4,500, but it seemed too good to be true so I passed on inquiring about it. Plus I don’t really have the place to put it or the spare cash to spend, but once I get a place with a garage you bet your ass I’m buying one.
Eventually when I retire to Brazil or decide to just abandon the US I’ll get one of those Fiat Strada’s and put a better motor in it. There’s tons down there.

This is truly what you were eating in this soup as a kid, WAS IT WORTH IT???
Carburetor cleaner kills wasps on contact, since we always had old cars growing up and lived in the sticks we also always got wasp nests. I still keep some around just in case. I don’t even own a car with a carburetor anymore. They get a good distance of spray too for added safety when dealing with them.
