Oh goodness, 24 years ago I was uninformed, narrowminded and had been brought up sheltered and rather conservative. So I used to be hugely trans- and homophobic. I wasn’t actively hurting or confronting anyone, but I was definitely a big part of the problem.

It actually was webcomics that deprogrammed me. That showed me a world I simply did not know but quickly felt empathy for. Those were normal, lovely people who simply existed differently from me, they weren’t a threat and they had so many struggles pushed on them only for being different.

Today I’m far-left, progressive, super empathetic, happy that a lesbian friend calls me “one of the good ones” and that I, as a huuuuuge white cis guy, can be an ally and create a safe space around me for everyone who needs it.

If you read the resolution and the answers of national governments why they abstained, the answer is found in points 4 and 14 of the resolution, where everyone who fought against the anti-Hitler coalition is condemned and equivocated with nazi-sympathisers. This does include people who opportunistically fought againt the Red Army in the baltic states and Ukraine for national liberation from the USSR, but not necessarily on the german side.

Yes, some of those “national liberation fighters” were absolute shitbag nazi scum, but not all of them were and history is generally more complex than just good and bad.

There was a movement to restrict those two points to language that does not automatically include these anti-soviet forces among the ranks of the nazis, but the changes were not adopted.

Some politicians posit the hypothesis that the resolution was worded in such a way through russian string pulling, because they wanted to be able to paint every anti-russian fighter in the time of the second world war as pro-Hitler.

Honestly, my country learned its lesson only through a new generation having grown up in the results of the war. Before 68 talking about Nazis still being judges, prosecutors, heads of police etc. wasn’t really tolerated in polite society. Policy was always “Don’t speak about it, don’t acknowledge it, just move along and everything’s fine.”

Only the gigantic student protests in the late 60s early 70s changed that and created the culture of honest confrontation and dealing with the past. And it is highly under threat now that the post-war generation, the babyboomers are leaving the demographics, because people are forgetting how hard that culture had to be fought for. They had to fight conservatives tooth and nail for it and now it’s slowly drifting out of focus.
