Five@beehaw.orgto Technology@beehaw.org•Telegram is indistinguishable from an FSB honeypotEnglish1·22 days agoFor those organizations like BOAK and Resistance Committee, Telegram functions as a home page for making public announcements. It is superior to having a website because it can’t be DDOS’d, has fewer attack surfaces that the organization has to be responsible to keep secure, doesn’t have ICANN WHOIS reporting, or need someone’s credit card on file. It’s also free and benefits from the network effect of Telegram’s existing popularity.
Do you think that Telegram can continue to be used for this purpose while taking additional security precautions? Or do you think the risk is too great, and no amount of precautions can justify using the service?
Five@beehaw.orgto Technology@beehaw.org•Telegram is indistinguishable from an FSB honeypotEnglish5·23 days agoThank you for your technical work, and for patiently explaining things to people in the comments. This is a really incredible thread to encounter on the Fediverse.
Telegram is used by anti-Putin resistance groups like BOAK and Resistance Committee. They advertise channels that are relatively easy for anyone to join without needing privileged access. As long as they’re not using Russian-purchased sims to manage and post to the channels, how does this change their security model going forward?
Definitely lookalikes.

Not a single comment mentioned the GOAT:
Queer space pirate polycules or no dice.
Gene Rodenberry was a WWII veteran and former cop who was transparent that Star Trek was intended as propaganda. The Galactic Federation is a super-power that represents the role the United States plays as an international super-power. The values of the universe are American liberal democratic humanism, and the hegemony of the United States is while not perfect, is building a better future for everybody. There is an inexplicable fight with a balloon cetacean, and plenty of jarring ai video clips.
Socialism isn’t just a national system of government. Socialism is a mindset, a set of values, a way of life.
Socialism is already happening in pockets and small groups. Often the less they overtly advertise their socialism, the more socialist they can be - because people love socialism in practice despite being taught to hate it in theory. Doing small scale organizing is reasonable and achievable. Direct action is going to get you places in the short term, because it is local and focused on the goals of you and your comrades. Forming a tenants union, organizing at your workplace, joining a cooperative – these are all direct actions you can take right now, and not only help you in the short term, but will build a bridge to much bigger things in the future.
If you feel small steps are just a circle jerk, if you are waiting for some large watershed moment where everyone else decides to live under socialism, you’re going to have a bad time. You shouldn’t expect yourself or anyone else to be able to effect sudden utopian change. But you do have incredible agency in deciding how you live. By participating in the small direct actions, you can see how socialism can improve your life first hand, not just in theory. You can get first-hand experience with leaders and comrades, and build your intuition about whether groups are actually socialist, or just another version of oppression. Changing the world may seem impossible if you focus on the big picture, the secret is focusing on changing yourself to be a better person, someone who will thrive and help others to thrive in a socialist world. I find hope in learning to connect better with others, and learning through my interactions with them what kinds of alternate societies can be possible. Every step in self-improvement, every breakthrough you make in your own journey changes the world in a real, tangible way for the better.

Republicans Are.English2·2 years agoThe guy you’re trying to pass the buck to, money_loo, is from a lemmy instance that only has Chicago sports communities and whose front page is mostly federated meme posts. You’re a BeeHaw user. You’ve presumably read and agreed to the Beehaw community documents.
I expect more than anti-intellectualism from you.
Five@beehaw.orgto Entertainment@beehaw.org•Bradley Cooper in ‘Jewface’ storm after Leonard Bernstein trailer reveals prosthetic noseEnglish1·2 years agoThat definitely changes things. Out of curiosity, I looked up what other movies he directed and produced.
He produced and starred in American Sniper, which was incidentally also kind of a political disaster. The nose prosthetic reminds me of the American Sniper fake baby hilarity. Bradley put the blame on the director, but the director makes it sound like it was a monetary and not an artistic choice. That would put the responsibility on the shoulders of the producer.

Are you suggesting that the political aspects of technology shouldn’t be discussed in a technology community?
Are you implying that technology is apolitical? That there are technology subjects to discuss that don’t have a political component?
Do discussions of the applications of technology not belong in a technology community?
Five@beehaw.orgto Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•Natural wood glues, general feedback?English3·2 years agoHave you tried sokui? If you have leftover asian rice, all you need is a blender. It was historically used in Japan to supplement traditional furniture and housing wood joinery.
Five@beehaw.orgto Entertainment@beehaw.org•Bradley Cooper in ‘Jewface’ storm after Leonard Bernstein trailer reveals prosthetic noseEnglish5·2 years agoYikes! They gave Bradley Cooper an even bigger nose than Leonard Bernstein. Is this some kind of antisemitic attack on Jake Gyllenhaal for not taking a pay cut to play the part?
If feel like this is more a studio scandal than a Cooper scandal. They did the casting and approved the prosthetic. I’m disappointed the actor gets the heat and the institution isn’t mentioned.
If you want to get angry at Bradley, his relationship with 21 year old Suki Waterhouse was super gross. The studio holds no blame for that mess.

Five@beehaw.orgOPto U.S. News@beehaw.org•U.S. Official Hints at Possible Plea Deal for Julian AssangeEnglish2·2 years agoThanks. Yeah, I think I heard about this jury, but only that its deliberation was secret, and I never found out what was decided. When the indictment was unsealed, I assumed it was the revelation of this Jury’s decision.
Five@beehaw.orgOPto U.S. News@beehaw.org•U.S. Official Hints at Possible Plea Deal for Julian AssangeEnglish2·2 years agoYou’re right, it was during the Trump administration. For some reason I thought the first indictment had been made and then sealed during Obama’s tenure. Trump’s attack was a major escalation.
I don’t see any reference to a Grand Jury in the linked article, and I can’t find anything in Google about “assange grand jury 2010”. Are you thinking about this section?
Justice officials said they looked hard at Assange but realized that they have what they described as a “New York Times problem.” If the Justice Department indicted Assange, it would also have to prosecute the New York Times and other news organizations and writers who published classified material, including The Washington Post and Britain’s Guardian newspaper.
It seems to indicate that they didn’t even bother to assemble a grand jury, which is even better for Obama.
Thread Topic: “Fascists attack leftist organization.”
@PhilipTheBucket: “The problem with the left is leftist infighting. I’m a leftist, and let’s instead make this thread about how terrible this leftist organization is!”
