  • That sounds remarkably similar to the court reform proposal by Pete Buttigieg. Although I don’t remember the specifics enough to say with confidence exactly how similar, I know he wanted each presidential terms to get a nomination and to remove the lifetime appointment in favor of a lengthy term. Although I think he wanted a portion of the court to be nominated by the justices themselves, including Chief Justice, but that was probably a more naive mindset that stemmed from a time when we had significantly more faith in the impartiality and apolitical motivations of the SCOTUS. I don’t know if that would be a good idea anymore, considering how easy it was for Trump to ratfuck the composition of the courts.

  • The only thing I agree with on Trump here is that he’s correctly pointing out that WalMart made billions in profits last year. Yes, WalMart supported this monster in the first place thinking it would work out for them in the long run, so it’s a leopards eating faces scenario for sure, and I wouldn’t be sad if WalMart lost profits this year because of Trump’s stupidity. It’s just too bad that regular people are going to suffer because WalMart killed the small businesses that used to support towns that they wormed their way into.

We aren’t even done adjusting to inflation pricing, and here we are not getting slapped with a Trump Tax on top of it. Madness.

  • Trump blew up the economy only to pause or walk back every single one of his stupid tariffs that were supposed to “make everybody rich” and bring manufacturing back to America. Could have seen that one coming from a mile away.

And we’ll never know the terms of the new trade deals he negotiates, only that they are great and better than before and that we should be thanking him on our hands and knees. As if anybody actually gives a single fuck about whether or not the U.S. runs a trade deficit.

Mark my words, these tariffs are never going to go fully into effect for any significant amount of time. One day into their implementation and it was clear how damaging and destructive they were, so they got paused to halt the chaos. Trump now needs a way to pull back on the reins and rescind the tariffs while still looking like he is emerging victorious. I expect more “breakthrough trade deals” in the coming weeks. In spite of this, however, the damage to the trust in American stability and economic certainty will probably never recover from the absolutely idiotic implementation of these tariffs for the sake of gaining negotiation power when a phone call could have had the same effect.

  • Why would he do that?

It’s not why, but when. He already did this during his first term, the first time he started a trade war with China (which he lost).

He didn’t bail out the farmers because he actually cares about them, but because there was an election in 2020 that he was trying to win and needed their support.

Remains to be seen if he will bother to help them again this time. He’s talking about a 3rd term and other frightening shit, but his second term has been moving so fast that I’d like to think he doesn’t care about what the public thinks anymore, he just wants to extract as much value of of the position as possible.

  • Trump and Jinping are playing a game of chicken and Trump has already slammed on the brakes while Jinping still has 1000m of track left in front of him.

If I were them, I wouldn’t make a deal either - Trump had to be reminded by all the big box giants just how much he needs cheap Chinese goods to keep the shelves stocked. They have all the power and hold a shit ton of US national debt so they can wait out a trade war indefinitely while Trump will use any tariff profits to bail out farmers and other industries impacted by them not being able to sell to China at a 140% markup or whatever they set their nonsensical made-up tariff rates at.

  • Oh yeah, decades at a minimum. How long has it been since Reagan was president? We’re still dealing with the fallout from his administration all these years later. Granted, Reagan was just a bad president that could project the confidence of a competent one so he got a lot of leeway from the political establishment and I don’t think Trump enjoys the same amount of trust from our institutions, but he’s cranking the dial up to 11 in terms of trying to get away with shit that will change the country possibly forever and in an objectively bad way.

And the left will forever be trying to play catch-up as we waste consecutive terms undoing the harm done rather than pushing a progressive agenda.

  • How long until the market simply becomes immune to the back-and-forth tariff nonsense? I feel like at this point Trump is just a fucking moron and people are having to seize the wheel from him to prevent total collapse of the system. He hikes the tariffs up, then pauses them hours after they go into effect. The inherently contradictory goal of wanting to bring American manufacturing back to America while simultaneously using tariffs as a negotiating tool makes no fucking sense no matter how you try to explain it.

Is this all just trying to control the narrative that the economy is crashing as a direct result of his economic plan?

  • 100% agree. I was always okay with Midichlorians because everybody seemed to have misinterpreted what Qui-Gon said when testing Anakin’s blood for them. They are drawn to powerful Force sensitives, they aren’t the cause of force sensitivity. it doesn’t demystify the Force just because there’s a measurable way to test for Force sensitivity. Yet, that misunderstanding persists to this day.

The Mortis arc is just stupid. I’ve never watched that far into TCW to actually see it, but I’ve seen clips here and there and read the synopsis on Wookieepedia and it just sounds so contrived.
