No, any weather radar around here is either owned / operated by airports or the military. Although if the price were low enough that’d be a pretty cool hobby to get into, with many legal hurdles I’m sure lol. I’m sure some individuals would pay for the premium weather provider who have the radars, that’s what I’m proposing they scrape the data from. Like you say, emergency data is really where this will hurt people, especially in areas with hurricanes and tropical storms.
Oh I know it takes a lot of work, but that’s why I have a hard time understanding where the profit will come from. And why couldn’t they just scrape the current weather along with the current forecast to share? Sure it may not be updated with the latest and greatest info we’ve come to expect, but it wasn’t that long ago that the forecast was obtained daily in the paper. I know I sure as hell won’t be paying for it (put aside from the fact I’m Canadian (for now…)), I’d sooner get an anemometer and start taking my own readings.
I still don’t see how they plan to privatize weather forecasting. All it takes is one or two people from each city to scrape the data and upload it to a free alternative site. It’s not like health care where each person needs individualized care, it’s more like streaming services and we’re all seeing how that’s going. Never thought the future would involve pirating weather forecasts…

Nope, I never claimed anything of the sort of course, I am basing all of the understandings I have off the research I can do on publicly avalible stats and statements. I’m just replying to your “someone make a counterpoint” comment like you asked. Despite saying you haven’t reviewed Apples financials and that you don’t want to claim something that doesn’t exist, you seem very set on the fact that tarrifs were a major factor. I agree that Apple would never state the reason, they are a private company and are allowed to do so, I’d probably do the same.
Edit: Don’t know why I said private, they are publicly traded but still have no requirement to disclose their reasonings to the general public.
Yes, of course, about half their revenue comes from outside the US from a quick search. But doesn’t that reinforce my point that tarrifs were likely not the primary reason for this US investment? China is not threatening tarrifs on Apple, yet they still plan to invest there because it is in their best interest and the interests of their shareholders.
As the other guy said, I think Apple is working in it’s own interests more than anything and the tarrifs were not the primary motivation. For one, Apple does not mention tarrifs or reference them in both their 2021 $430 billion investment announcement or their more recent $500 billion announcement. On top of that, at the end of last year Bloomberg reported Apple is still committing to investing more in China. Do the tarrifs play a part in the US investment? Maybe, but I think it would be foolish to say this is a sign of them being the primary motivator for them.
I remember when “the cloud” was the AI of its time, being used everywhere and everything as a buzz word, someone released a browser addon called cloud-to-butt that replaced the word cloud with butt. Mild side effect of making weather forecasts concerning. I’m sure the code could be changed!
There are a few out there, Ken Klippenstein has been receiving and publishing a lot of leaks recently. It does make me worried for his security though.

Heck yeah, I remember building out and optimizing my PC to squeeze every frame I could out of Arma 3 back when it released. I have such fond memories of that game, I played tons of casual multiplayer games and Arma 3 Project Life which was a really well done invite only life roleplay game mode (before the developers killed the community by being dicks).
