  • Smaller user base. It is both good and bad but the community for my city is dead (probably there were only like 8 of us on here).

    Am old enough to know from experience that the early people on any platform are the computer geeks so expect the tech communities to thrive first - but as someone else said, music communities die, sports, arts, things that are pretty widely popular. Honestly happy with the slow and steady growth of the !cocktails@lemmy.world so if it’s an indicator, the general interest people are joining just not quickly but some must be sticking. I would guess at some point it will be perfect then too big but who knows?

    Personally I also miss the nonsexual nudes threads like nakedprogress and normalnudes. Again that’s a lack of users issue, you need a lot of people willing to post, to have even a few willing to post nude.




  • Yeah I was an anorexic teenager and while I didn’t just keep getting smaller, was maintaining at 99lbs, 5’9" for years. I weigh about 150 now and even though I literally feel so good physically, and understand that’s kinda unusual at my age, and have managed to at least keep my bone mass (it’s low, obviously, but not declining, made it through menopause with all of it, and that’s also unusual) and logically understand that:

    1. This is considered smack dab perfect weight for my height and age.

    2. Losing weight now would be kind of dumb and counterproductive.

    I cannot shake the fear and dislike and anxiety over being this big. I don’t want to be 99lb, no way no how absolutely not. But at every single point between that and this I feel too fat. There is no weight that will look how I want, though, and again, I suspect this here is ideal because nothing hurts and I’m strong, though not fast. I know it’s my mind that is the problem, and not my body. But knowing it doesn’t make me not feel too big.






  • I was on Reddit a long time, never had a Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or Snapchat, back in the dark ages I used Usenet but not AOL or Myspace or anything like that. I try not to use much that is not anonymous.

    For a couple of years now just Lemmy, in those two years I have put I think 4 posts on Reddit (people with local questions, Lemmy is not big enough for a good local sub.), and look at it maybe once every two months, not browsing but in answer to specific questions.

    I wouldn’t describe myself as hardcore, though. Regular person. I look at the phone’s news feed, talk to other people, get information other places.


  • I think when the surgery is good, nobody notices it. Two women at my work had to get eyelid lifts for medical reasons, and both came out looking so much better and not at all “done”. Really nobody would ever think they had plastic surgery and even I forget then think wow that was great work.

    That standard filler face though? I know the look it’s emulating and we cannot all look like that! I knew an old old lady who had been a Vogue fashion model in the 40s and 50s and she had that bone structure that ages so well, the high big cheekbones, eyebrows that had started out so high she had room for them to fall, I look at those overdone samey samey faces and it’s not going to work. I cannot take my wide round face and morph it into that with filler!

    Sunscreen. Retin-A. Sleep and exercise. Those are the way to keep looking good as you are getting old. I can’t understand botox because if exercise keeps everything else healthy how is it bad for your face?






  • Gym membership where I live is cheap. Like it would take years of monthly gym payments to equal the cost of a good set of weights and stuff to work out with. Husband has a lot of free weights so I do lift at home but do yoga at a studio, and when I did use the gym, I took aerobic dance classes, did stairmaster and watched people lift weights, used machines and lifted weights myself and didn’t have to take up half the bedroom with weights.

    I personally enjoy going someplace to work out a lot more than doing it at home, but I do both.

    Clothes don’t matter, don’t you have any loose shorts? That’s what I see guys wearing at the gym, they are probably like $5 at Walmart.

    ETA: on your actual question yes home workout can be effective, of course. Plenty of people do fine just going out for a run and doing some pushups, pullups, unweighted squats, planks, etc; and yes I enjoy more going to the gym, and once there, will work out - at home always something else needs to be done and it’s harder to focus.
