I think anime can be quite good at psychological horror, but yeah visual horror not so much. Like you suggest, I do think the disconnect might simply be too much, although I feel visual novels can be pretty good at it (haven’t played any, but that’s what I hear).

Makes me wonder, are there any western animations that do good horror?

You made me check out Telework Yotabanashi again and I found out that there apparently was an official translation released, so thanks to you too haha

Other than Wotakoi, the only ones I can think of, and are worthwhile imo, are ‘Science Fell In Love, So I Tried To Prove It’, ‘Astro Note’ and ‘Recovery Of An MMO Junkie’ though the latter 2 aren’t really full on romances.

I can think of a few manga though, if that’s okay with you:

• Manga by Yamada Kintetsu (Sweat and Soap, Telework Yotabanashi, Kasane to Subaru)
• More Than Lovers, Less Than Friends
• She Loves To Cook, She Loves To Eat
• I Have A Crush At Work (currently also being adapted into an anime, but only 1 ep is out, so…)

Attack On Titan doesn’t drag in my opinion and I totally recommend it. The 1st season is the “worst” of the bunch, but still a decent action anime, after that it becomes really solid with good suspense, mystery and political games (a lot of action too of course, but it takes a backseat).

There seem to be Bluray entries in AniDB, but I can’t tell if it’s the same version. I have UK region Blurays, so maybe that’s it.
