  • I’ve been running my server on an old laptop and a 20TB external hard drive connected via USB. it’s not fast, there’s a multi-second delay when the drive goes to “sleep” if nobody has used jellyfin in a while, which makes it appear to not work, but once it spins up it works like normal. this has let me keep things simple and cheap. I back up to another 20TB hard drive, which I recently bought as I could finally afford it. beefy hardware is great but not necessary, if you’re okay with some limits.

  • Signal is a publicly available app that provides encrypted communications, but it can be hacked.

This is misleading statement that will only confuse people who want to use a secure messenger.

To clear things up with anyone who’s not technically inclined: Anything can be theoretically hacked. Signal has not been hacked and has no history of being compromised.

The Signal “hacks” that linked people’s Signal client to devices that aren’t theirs were sophisticated phishing/spoofing attacks. The equivalent of getting someone to click a malicious link via email because it looked like the real thing.

A reminder that you still need to do your due diligence even when using a secure service. Technology alone cannot completely protect you.

  • Checkout Notesnook. I’ve tried most of the ones you’ve listed and have been really enjoying how well it works compared to the competition considering its end-to-end encrypted.

    A few features:

    • Clients and server are open source.
    • End-to-end encrypted note syncing.
    • You can publish public notes.
    • You can publish privates notes that require a password to view.
    • You can self-host the sync server.
    • You can self-host the publishing server.
    • Full offline mode.
    • At rest encryption.
    • Multi-platform clients with feature parity (Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, MacOS, Web).
    • Most if not all of the general features you’d expect from a notes taking application.

One thing I really like about the project is how open they are about what they’re doing, why they’re doing it and what the future holds. It’s been great seeing their roadmap (https://notesnook.com/roadmap/) and seeing promised features land with new ones being added, and I’ve only been using it for less than a year now!

  • Go fuck yourself with this pacifist attitude

there you go again, assuming you know anything about who i am, who i support, and what actions i’ve taken/not taken.

my critique of your attitude is that you blame others in a “matter of fact” way without knowing anything about them. childish, immature, and edgy are appropriate descriptions for your reactions. i’m no longer responding after this as clearly you are quick to anger and anger doesn’t lead to rational thought. if you’re not already seeing a therapist, i strongly suggest it. lashing out and projecting doesn’t hurt anyone but yourself.
