  • I have a Gigabyte motherboard, and the only issue I’ve run into—even with Arch—is this specific B550 board uses some third-party sensors, and the necessary it87 module doesn’t load and isn’t included by default. This makes it impossible to utilize tools like CoolerControl to manage fan curves.

Thankfully, some kind soul manages a DKMS module via the AUR, in spite of both Gigabyte and the IC manufacturers being less than helpful.

  • It makes me sad that some of the “nerdy” people in these spaces would join with the very people that would gladly throw them under the bus or use them as minority fodder, but as I’ve seen with experts in science, high intelligence in one area doesn’t mean you are capable of critical thinking.

ETA: to be clear, I’m not saying we should ignore scientists and experts, just that specialized expertise ≠ general expertise.

  • You need to think of the kind of people that are interested in nerdy computing topics. Regular people that just want to make something nice to share with the world, sure, but also incels, toxic masculinity proponents, etc.

They’re mostly able to hide, because like you point out, computer science and related topics are mostly apolitical; when you make scary changes, however, those same latter people can’t help themselves but to blame the villainous “They.”

  • Good question! I feel like Plasma generally crams more into the UI than Gnome. Context menus, global menus, desktop icons, the system tray, etc., there’s so much space being utilized. When you have limited screen real estate, having more at your fingertips matters (for the way I do things). Additionally, you can set the power button to open the shutdown overlay, which I don’t think is something Gnome has; it’s a button within easy reach on my laptop, so that functionality makes sense.

Some people have said that gesture support is also better on Plasma, and while I don’t tend to need it currently, it’s something I might want someday. So while I agree that Gnome seems like it should be more suited, I find it’s actually the opposite for the way I do things!

  • Is the word minority so attached to race that it’s not used to talk about relative sizes in groups without clarification (if you understand what I mean)?

Yes, but it’s contextual. If someone is a minority, it’s usually referring to being a part of a minority class, often one that’s either protected or used by bigots as a point of hatred.

Being in the minority, however, can refer to having relative uniqueness.

English is hard. I’m sorry it has such stupid rules, but here we are.

    • I’m not sure what you mean. Lack of desktop icons is only valuable to people who want that (I don’t, and I remove them on my Plasma systems).
    • Gnome has a minimize button, and you need only turn it on in Tweaks > Windows.
    • You can change themes in Tweaks > Appearance, and you can install themes by script or by manually dropping the files where they need to go (something you sometimes have to do on Plasma, too).
      • You can further adjust themes with extensions or scripts. Unless you change themes often, quick theme swapping is not a feature everyone needs or wants. How often are people doing this IRL?
    • I can right click all my menu and dash/dock icons and get an app-specific context menu, so I’m not sure what you mean with this gripe.
    • Systray is one of the things I don’t like about Plasma, and I wish they’d find a different solution. It’s bad enough on Windows.

I run both DEs on different systems, and they’re both good and bad at different things, but they both have comparable feature sets. Their workflows are different, yet you can do virtually all the same things in each.
