Everyone, go update your 2003 forum avatars.
My friend, most people weren’t using PNG in 2003, especially for forum avatars. They were glitchy on browsers (IE) for almost a decade after that.

You got Jazz Jackrabbit to run on the steam deck? I tried to install everything GOG had available (including 2) and had no success with heroic. Teach me your ways.
Honest question, but on a technical level isn’t discord basically IRC with some bells, whistles, emojis, and a some WebRTC Logic wrapped in electron with a large marketing budget? Throw in some cloud storage and a CDN for images. What am I missing? I’m not saying it’s “easy”, but I’m curious what it would take to build a solid streamlined FOSS alternative built on combining existing technologies.
Edit: I’m not familiar with the ecosystem… is the issue with existing FOSS bad UI and complicated onboarding? Missing features? Or is it simply a critical mass issue?
I love Frakes. He’s just so passionate about what he’s working on and honestly it’s so rare to see people in his role geek out so much - not only does he “get it”, but he loves it - and as a fan I’m here for it.
Doodle is a bit more artistic, while jiffie is a bit more poetic. I haven’t found any practical differences in deployment.
Strange New Worlds (SNW) is the single best entry point for someone new to the franchise, and that’s a black mountain I’m willing to die on. It blends modern storytelling with the classic Trek formula, and since it’s basically a pickup of the original Pilot, it’s pretty darn close do the beginning of the timeline.
Strange New Worlds offers an accessible entry point that holds the same core as The Next Generation (TNG) or the original series (TOS). There’s only two seasons so far, but if you like it and are craving more, I recommend watching TNG afterwards, and continuing that line in order of series air date (DS9, VOY, ENT).
It’s easy for many of us to recommend our favorite series, or our own entry points, but the reality is most of Trek is dated and not a good place to start for someone used to modern television.
I feel this - I’m renting a house that has a motion sensor built into the kitchen sink. Now when I’m over someone else’s house, i can’t turn on the sink without giving a magical wave first like I’m some kind of wizard displaced in time.
This was the weakest episode of the season so far, and I still loved it. I couldn’t get over the fact Uhura wasn’t confined to sickbay or quarters by mid episode, but the rest of it showcases why SNW is quickly becoming my favorite Trek series.
As someone who once had to work with Oracle databases and licensing as a part of their job, i will never willingly use another Oracle product.
When was the last time you used Big Picture? I have a micro ITX build hooked up to my TV running Bazzite desktop, and have Big Picture loading at boot.
It’s a console. And it’s fantastic. It also lets me mod it so I can make it look like a Wii U if I wanted.
