  • We need undercover police to investigate crime organizations.

We need unmarked police vehicle to catch dangerous drivers who put everyone at risk.

If that’s all they did, and they were transparent about even their undercover operations to catch actual threats to our community, I would have a lot more support for them.

The reality is that cops are brute-squad who serve their own interests more times than not. I often find it telling about the state of the narrative that when police “accidentally” shoot some black kid in the back nine times, it’s a scandal that disappears and there are people coming out of the woodwork to say “that kid shouldn’t have run.”

But as soon as someone posts a story or clip of a cop shooting their dog in their own house without warning or pause, it’s massive outcry and cop-hate. Fun fact, cops kill 10000 or more pets a year

If you ever had a beloved pet in your life, imagine for a moment a cop coming in your home for unrelated reasons and then drawing their gun and shooting your dog in the head for barking and then carrying on like nothing happened.

(If this doesn’t make your blood boil, you would make an ideal cop.)

  • late '90s - early aughts.

Around that time, the show “Cops” became one of the most popular shows on television and people believed it was real and unedited. As well as a slew of “realistic and gritty” cop shows hit the airwaves (ask your parents what an “airwave” is) and there was a wave of pro-cop sentiment after the LA riots because media selectively showed cops being “heroes against the mobs” which at the time, was very new to see playing out on live-ish television.

There was some pushback because of the Rodney King beating and others that were being caught on video, the term “police brutality” became a buzzword, but it also seemed like it was a small, isolated problem that went away because people carried cameras all the time and “a few bad apples” and all that. (Not shown before body-cams: cops beating or shooting the people carrying cameras.)

  • They don’t believe in things they don’t understand, and they don’t understand things they can’t see with their own caveman senses.

We crawled out of 30,000 years of trying and failing to start a civilization, we almost went extinct, we lost countless billions of lives to war, murder, famine, disease and hardships of a natural world that doesn’t want us to live. Just to get to this point where a handful of coked-up, mentally handicapped rich fucks can decide all those countless sacrifices were for nothing.

It genuinely boggles me that Americans are at all accepting of this. Where the FUCK are my countrymen who see how stupid and dangerous this is? We should all be storming HHS and dragging RFK and his unqualified goon squad out to the lawn. Seriously. I am not kidding. Modern medical knowledge is too valuable to let some unelected clown who has zero knowledge or training to just decide to roll the entire thing back because his other clowns sowed distrust among our stupidest.

If we don’t rise up and do something, I strongly feel you all deserve what the consequences will be.

  • I just keep repeating to myself and others, “Nobody is coming.” Even if people made better choices last November, it would have only been delaying the inevitable consumption of the nation that we’re seeing in full mouthful right now.

Even if we got the biggest, boldest grass-roots movement started, it would immediately be swallowed by the existing political Machine & Spectacle, which would either digest it (Remembering that time Tim Waltz was forbidden from calling Republicans “weird” anymore) or they would destroy it with the same old “amplify both sides to the point which reasonable followers tune out” tactic that the KGB pioneered.

Somehow all arrows point to a future where the constitution has become a nifty relic somewhere, everything is privatized, climate change is in full-swing and people are really feeling the shift, while America is suffering through a catastrophic but slow, steady decline to the point that President/CEO Baron has to install a firewall around the US so the citizens don’t see news from Europe or China and how their quality of life is. This could be in 10 - 15 years.

Put away gold I guess, I dunno man, I’m tired.

  • My last therapist said “ADHD is the smoke, the fire is usually trauma or autism.”

Turns out I have both. Welp, middle-age is as good as any time to start reconciling that your entire life has been a constant struggle to keep a mask on and nearly every crisis I’ve dealt with might not have been a moral failing on my part but actually a dysfunction of some executive control from masking for so long and hiding my own PTSD.

Whichever you got going on in there, I highly recommend working on the basics. Get more sleep. Make better separation between work and leisure time. Eat better and hydrate better. Try to reduce caffeine and other self-medications. Stop drinking entirely. Get some daily exercise even if it’s just a light walk, particularly after work/class, it really, really helps your brain create healthier separations between work/chores (survival) and rest (loafing and relaxing, playing games, watching media.)

The other thing I want to scream at everyone from the rooftops, no matter what your exact mental-health issue is, this is universal:

Your brain is not a reasonable, rational calculator of logic, it is a story-telling machine designed to tell you stories to explain what you’re feeling in order to create some sense of cohesion with the world.

And that’s it, that’s all it does, all day long. The stories do not have to make sense, it doesn’t have to be reasonable, and you will often think the stories are accurate because they come from your own mind, you will add to the stories, you will roll them over in your brain over and over, feeling worse and worse, hating others, hating yourself, despairing for no outside reason… it’s like being enslaved to your own brain. Learn to identify when you start feeling strong feelings, and watch your brain very carefully, be aware of the way your brain will start ruminating as soon as you feel a negative feeling. If you can nip it right there, if you can break the rumination cycle, you will realize that your own brain is just sabotaging you from the inside and all the stories you tell yourself are fantasies or exaggerations of reality. It might not cure your mental health, but it will give you your days back, it will give you time and energy to fight it harder and more intelligently. You are not your brain. Your brain is not logical.

  • I’m exactly where you are, assessments included.

I was never an accelerationist and thought at one time it was the laziest of ideals, but now I’m seeing my whole nation dissolve into the investment portfolios of a small handful of people and wondering exactly what kind of consequences my countrymen actually need to experience before they realize how incredibly important it is to take part in, and be aware of, how motherfucking democracy works worked. Our people here have the memory of goldfish, and either didn’t remember the last time they got screwed by republicans broadly, or were so distressed by the contention and gravitas of the election cycle that they tuned out and stayed home… with the rest of the 45% of eligible, registered voters who stayed home.

To say nothing of the weakest, flimsiest excuses people gave for being lazy about taking part in democracy. You saw tons of it right here on Lemmy. “I cannot in good conscious vote for anyone who won’t take a stand against Israel.” Uh huh, sure buddy, your post history is entirely video games, I am having a hard time believing you’re regularly out there on the Gaza strip handing out aid and food.

Our country really needs a hard slap across the face, and sadly I don’t even think this current situation is doing the trick. The slap that will be hard enough to get people out of their couches will be a real bad one that I don’t wish on anyone, but I feel like it’s inevitable either way. One way is boiling to death slowly, the other is jumping into the fire. I can’t decide which is worse, but the outcome will be the same.
