Probably both, except within the bounds of easily ‘random’ bounds. Supposing it were possible for a mammal to be green, it wouldn’t matter of green were ‘better’, unless it happened at the right time. Orange could have won out simply because it was good enough to do one thing (camoflauge for pretty) and didn’t have enough downside to message that benefit (high visibility to hunters or less valuable prey). Heck, a gene that turned a lion invisible could have turned up and it wouldn’t be guaranteed to carry forward even if it didn’t have any downsides if the random recipient also happened to be clumsy or unlucky and died of some random injury or disease.

Evolution doesn’t really have any tools that aren’t random, at least until intelligence came around to provide other ‘non natural’ paths, though of course those are just as natural as the others, just that we think we’re special and above nature.

  • Another way to look at it is like having to use Windows because that’s what they use at your job. There’s a problem but because most people are oblivious or don’t care, the momentum is difficult to escape. You may find it easy to say ‘quit you job then’ to fully show your disapproval but not everyone has that luxury.

I do hope everyone that is stuck using it mentions in every commission or interaction that they are available on different sites as well though.

Anyone still using it or of convenience though should quit immediately.

  • Or, if you want to shut it down, the plan works, but since the magic effect has a range, to ball begins expanding before it makes it to the ring, taking the end of the barrel and the ring with it. If the ring is indestructible the character has to go on a search for the ring at the point of impact every time, it i expands within the ring, meaning you have a canon ball that explodes at the end of your gun with shrapnel, or you have to melt the ball down to retrieve the ring downrange.

  • I think the engineering part kicks in once the cannonball leaves the ring, or maybe around the mass of the shrunken ball. If the cannon ball retains it’s mass in it’s shrunken size does the gun have enough power to move it? If it does, then the gun is a ship cannon already, just a convenient size. If it doesn’t and can only shoot because the balls are as easy to fire as regular shot, then as soon as the ball exits the ring it is a cannonball being moved with the force of a small shot and likely drops to the ground an inch or so past the muzzle.

Yes, but that’s because that’s the way your mind interpreted it, it could have just as easily thought that the arrow (little side) should point in the forward direction from left to right, so ‘point to the bigger number’.

Basically two completely unrelated things both make sense to you in the same direction, and that happened to be the direction that the the people picking the symbols also picked. If they had simply picked the opposite direction, all the people who currently struggle might find out perfectly natural and be confused as to why ‘you’ have such a problem understanding it.
