  • The pride flag was envisioned and flown for the first time in San Francisco. For better or worse, most of global queer culture is us centric.

Most of the flags are also copyrighted or copylefted, to some degree or another. It’s a jumbled mess. But in general no one is profiting unless you are literally buying a physical flag, as all of them fall into fair use or can be freely licensed for use in commercial products.

  • First, watch this video entirely.

Next, talk to your friend. If nothing like what is talked about in the video is happening. Then, cool. Adults and teens can have friendly relationships in the context of mentorship/sharing family ties/same social circles. But your friend needs to understand that he is and will always be responsible for anything that happens in that relationship, even if it is her who misunderstand things. He is the adult, and it is his responsibility to keep things sane and appropriate, draw healthy boundaries and make sure it is not misconstrued as creepy, and it doesn’t matter if it wasn’t intentional.

If your friend is indeed doing some of those things, even if not intentionally, then he is being a creep and grooming is grooming, no matter the intention. The developmental gap is a massive power imbalance that will always make other adults be suspicious of this risk. The healthy thing to do is to keep the distance and the relation in appropriate terms. Girl will survive, she surely has her own social group to cope, and adults have no need to be friends with teens. A well adjusted and mature adult would have no shortage of age appropriate friendship opportunities.

  • “High quality music” is nothing but a placebo. Unless you have the hardware to punch through the quality, then the bitrate and format of the file doesn’t matter. Most people would complain about HQ availability and then listen to the music through bluetooth headphones, completely nullifying any advantage. Or use average headphones that sound bad no matter how much bitrate you try to send through them. But the kicker is, a high quality headphone will sound better even with regular lossy compression and typical bitrates. The HQ files will then sound barely slightly better, almost imperceptibly. Compression tech has come a really long way since the days of bad MP3s, advancement of OGG and AAC made MP3 irrelevant a decade ago.

  • Hey man, listen. Call centers suck. I worked at a call center, and it really really sucked. I’d be the first to empathize with workers locked up in call centers.

But this wasn’t even about a call center. It was a support experience survey for going to a physical store that offers support as one of the many things they sell and offer there. The place is not owned by the telecom company, they aren’t their employees.

The problem, again, is that the people designing, sending, collecting and overreacting to the support survey probably weren’t ever anywhere close to a remotely similar place. Which just shows how utterly useless and pointless the whole exercise is and how it is actually counterproductive to be honest on these corpo surveys.

  • I once got a call from a telecom marketing department because I rated a customer service agent with a 9 out of 10. When I told them it was not for anything the agent did, just that the store the support was in was extremely difficult to find, the caller got a bit aggressive. Like they expected me to shit talk this poor lady who had been so nice to me, just hard to find, and it was all corpo’s fault. The store wasn’t properly branded and signaled. She couldn’t take any comment that was negative on the company, just on the employee. So I told her how ridiculously stupid that system was. That I wanted to change my score to a perfect ten, comment, the best employee this company has, even better than the CEO. The caller got obviously upset. Told her to write down that if they ever call me again I will immediately cancel my contract. She went with, is there anything else I could help you with? Which is call center code for “I want to hang up”.

  • People are using NAS for things they aren’t meant to do. They are a storage service and aren’t supposed to be anything else. In a typical data center model, NAS servers are intermediate storage. Meant for fast data transfers, massive storage capabilities and redundant disk fault tolerance. We are talking hundreds of hard drives and hundred gigabit connection speeds inside the data center. This is expensive to run, so they are also very energy efficient, meant to keep the least amount of required disks spinning at any given moment.

They are not for video rendering, data wrangling, calculations or hosting dozens of docker containers. That’s what servers are for.

Servers have the processing power and host the actual services. They then request data from a NAS as needed. For example, a web service with tons of images and video will only have the site logic and UI images on the server itself. The content, video and images, will be on the NAS. The server will have a temporary cache where it will copy the most frequently accessed content and new content on demand. Any format conversion, video encoding, etc. Will be done by the server, not the NAS.

Now, on self-hosting of course, anything goes and they are just computers at the end of the day. But if a machine was purpose made for being a NAS server, it won’t have the most powerful processor, and that’s by design. They will have, however, an insane amount of sata, PCI-e channels and drive bays. And a ton of sophisticated hardware for data redundancy, hotswap capacity and high speed networks that is less frequent in servers.

  • Just to be very clear. This is happening because you didn’t have MFA active. I know it hurts to hear, but this is why you always migrate first, wipe the device second. MFA would’ve allowed you several methods for proof of ID. If your phone gets stolen, then thieves can’t even use the phone for anything. You can remote wipe and block the device, and it turns into paperweight. The device nukes your data then locks the bootloader.

  • Beware, Gnucash is meant to be pro level accounting software. Is not a simple ledger or a tech/crypto gateway. I also use it for my personal life, but there’s like 30% of features I don’t use because they’re business accounting stuff I don’t need. It predates the cloud, it cares not for the latest trends, it crunches numbers and spits out reports. That’s part of what I like about it. It is not simple but it also isn’t bloated.

  • They don’t need to outnumber the entire US population. First of all, a huge chunk are already blindly following anything without any critical thought. That erases, what, two or three hundred out of every 1000. Then they just need to construct a narrative that keeps most of the remaining people apathetic. Enlightened centrists, apathetic leftists, people too poor or too financially desperate to engage politically, they will prop up the regime unwittingly through inaction. That’s another three or four hundred. The remaining people willing to oppose will have limitations, either of resources (materials, money, guns, etc.), or capabilities (too old or with disabilities). So, realistically, those odds transform into 10 agents per 50 to 100 people. With access to massive wells of resources, it is perfectly feasible to submit an entire country with those proportions.

This is not to be pessimistic. But I have seen this exact same scenario operate in dozens of countries all across the world, and history. The biggest collaborator group of fascist regimes are the people who have been convinced or convinced themselves that laying low and pretending nothing is wrong is better. Those just minding their own business, not political, or wanting to move on with their lives and just being oblivious in general people are what keeps dictators in power.

The solution is extreme organization. Organize, promote opposition, get people to talk to each other regularly, meet in person, construct stable relationships and build a sense of community, belonging and radical empathy. Else, intelligence forces will tear any opposition apart.

On the contrary. It relies on the premise of segregating binaries, config and data. But since it is only running one app, then it is a bare minimum version of it. Most containers systems include elements that also deduplicate common required binaries. So, the containers are usually very small and efficient. While a traditional system’s libraries could balloon to dozens of gigabytes, pieces of which are only used at a time by different software. Containers can be made headless and barebones very easily. Cutting the fat, and leaving only the most essential libraries. Fitting in very tiny and underpowered hardware applications without losing functionality or performance.

Don’t be afraid of it, it’s like Lego but for software.
