In my experience the people relying on Excel cannot be bothered to learn Linux or job scheduling. So instead they get 10-20 thousand dollar dedicated workstations for excel, spss, etc.
Thankfully the newer hires are more flexible.

This is why the James Webb telescope was delayed
TotK felt more empty to me, but that’s probably a combination of already knowing the map and lacking Kass.
Avowed was very mid. I enjoyed it enough, but nothing about it was particularly brilliant or terrible.
Moths tend to rest wings appart, butterflies with wings folded together.
Inflation or not, a 50% price hike between generations is beyond absurd.
There was a big, high wall there that tried to stop me A sign was painted said “Private Property” But on the backside, it didn’t say nothing This land was made for you and me
Scenario I’ve been playing with:
Suppose you are kidnapped by two people. They tell you that one of them will shoot you and then let you go, but you get to decide who shoots. Person A says he will shoot you in the head. Person B says he will shoot you in the shoulder. Which do you choose?
The more think about this the more I like it. Both persons are clearly awful and contributed to the situation. Both could offer better choices but refuse. Both are rather similar in outcomes. But one is clearly worse.
Is it rational to choose to be shot at all? Is it rational to not choose the better of two alternatives?
The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the plan is to run up a massive debt now and then push the responsibility for dealing with that debt onto democrats if they win control after midterms.
Cue music: “It’s the circle of life”
According to Yale’s website their operating budget is about 6 billion of which 2 billion comes from the endowment. That seems a bit low, but they are probably putting some money back into the endowment to grow it further.
I’m not saying they couldn’t afford to keep this one class (surely they could) but funding the whole operation with just the endowment would fail in the long term.
Ah, but there would be another where someone anticipated this and figured out how to stop it.
Of course that then suggests a universe where a madman figured out how to destroy the multiverse and keep it from being stopped, and one where a dogooder anticipated that…
Such a multiverse could end up existing in a state of indeterminate existance. Like a certain cat…

At least half of us are below average.
Stadiums don’t vote. The last few weeks before the election there were several posts on lemmy about big crowds attending Haris events while Trump struggled to fill venues and bored his attendees. We now now how that turned out…
It is simple. The economy and the media.
Call it selfish, but most people are more concerned with their own well being and that of their families than anything external. They don’t see Gaza, climate change, or abortion in the grocery store, they see prices that are massively higher than they were during Trump. You can try to explain how economics works, how tarrifs are a bad idea, how inflation is actually down, but to many that’s just noise and why should they trust these economists over anyone else. Their lived experience is that, excluding covid, life was more affordable under Trump.
Take a look at the most popular cable channels and you see Fox news. Look at podcasts and there is Joe Rogan. Social media is arguably better, but X and Facebook are still big and skew right, plus the others are ripe for disinformation campaigns and bots. A large number of Americans regularly consume a diet of right wing propaganda.
Trump always overperforms. Even in 2020 he did better than he had any right to. This time there is no covid hanging over his head and Biden/Harris are taking all the blame for inflation.
It also does not hurt that millions of Americans willingly consume hours of right wing propaganda everyday. Fox News remains one of if not the top cable channel (after sports) and Joe Rogan one of the top podcasts. Meanwhile CNN has shifted right, papers like the Washington post have been compromised, and the remaining “liberal media” is so obsessed with appearing unbiased that they end up “sane washing” GOP craziness and inflating minor democrat flubs.
Coke zero > pibb zero > dr pepper zero > diet coke >>> diet Pepsi
I’m on the last day of a business trip and seem to be deep in Pepsi territory (first time I’ve ever even seen Starry.) Diet Pepsi is OK, but I’m hoping there is a coke vending machine on the other side of airport security at this small airport.
