It blows my mind that most people eat meat every day. We’ve normalized such insane things

The difference would be that presumably we’d be holding that prisoner despite Russians wishes not because of them. We paid for them (are paying?) to hold this guy. He’s not their prisoner, he’s ours. The whole situation is fucked but that analogy isn’t quite accurate.
Seems like a great opportunity for an actual televised protest. Line the parade route with opposition
In my mind you go to a protest to sign 16 petitions, add your signature to people who want to run for office, and register to vote/join a party/etc. I’m always a little discouraged when I go to one and see none of this. There’s a reason they group these rights together in the constitution, they are meant to go hand in hand. DSA has a decent presence where I live but I’ve never seen the actual democratic party out talking to people. Protests are filled with people asking ‘whats next’, and the Democrats keep failing to show up and answer the question.
There never was. Pretty sure that’s the joke. No one elected him. No one nominated him for anything. No one confirmed him.
I don’t understand. If they don’t recall why can’t they just open up their personal phone and check?
They are arguing that a real progressive would try to fix democracy. Overturn citizens United. Get money out of politics. Push for an alternative to first past the post. Remove the electoral college. You do those things and fascism becomes much easier to defend against.
Yeah but I think there is something to be said for him not being like other presidents. As much as I dislike a lot of former presidents I don’t think democracy was at stake. I think him being openly fascist kind of changes the game a bit so I don’t know how good of comparisons those are. Which is super not comforting if true
No this reasoning is flawed and used as an excuse for bad behavior. My father justified his alcoholism to himself by pointing out how independent all the kids turned out since he was useless, or how good we were with money because we could sense a scam from a young age as he was always trying to scam/manipulate us.
You can teach someone to cross the road by explaining the dangers and process to them, or you can teach them by driving enough cars into them that they either figure it out themselves (and carry the scars forever) or die. That doesn’t make you a good teacher
This one doesn’t make any sense to me. Of course all of our electricity imports come from Canada, I suspect the other 15% is mexico cause I don’t know who else we even can import from. That said, probably most of these ‘imports’ are more like trades in that sometimes the nearest grid is across the border. I don’t think Canada is sending bulk power to the US consistently (maybe on certain days depending on hydro and renewables) and doubt a tarriff here would be nearly as big an impact as something like steel. I could be wrong though
The solution I’ve heard is you’re able to go to the elections office after mailing your ballot and void the mailed one and vote in person. Depending on the level of control/oversight may be not realistic for everyone, but again, at that point I’m more concerned about the human than the vote and were talking a whole other problem to solve.
It’s crazy to me how cheap it is. Like, they could double the taxes and it would still feel incredibly affordable when compared to alcohol.
There’s something to be said here about how normal it is for people to be renting later and later in life. I totally get what you’re saying but it’s sad that it’s true.
Yup. Often best to use phrases like ‘oh my understanding was x, am I missing something’ or ‘Wait I don’t see how you’re accounting for x, what am I missing?’ or ‘i looked at the source a few times and it seems to be indicating x, not y, am I misunderstanding the impact of z?’. Basically, people are much more willing to admit err when you are. If you start a ‘debate’ by recognizing you could be wrong you immediately soften the ground for both parties. Plus, everyone walks away feeling like ‘we’ won since we ‘beat the problem’ . Also, sometimes you actually are missing something and now when it’s explained to you you don’t feel like a jerk. Good vibe kinda shit
If there were 100x less games but they all had the passion of stardew behind them I think we’d come out ahead
