I once worked at a hospital in the ER where the department director was a union-busting bastard, but the CEO was pretty reasonable. After I left, one of the other ER techs went to the CEO about our pay being messed up and got everyone $5-6/hour raises to actual market rate. Also, there were a few weeks when we were really understaffed that the hospital encouraged admin folks to volunteer as “candystripers” in the ER to do stuff like help clean/turn over rooms, and answer patient call lights for water, blankets, etc. And the CEO was down in the ER for a couple hours every evening helping out most of that time period. It was encouraging to see the CEO of the hospital putting on some gloves and helping us with basic stuff like cleaning and stocking.

Read interesting stuff, but open an account elsewhere if you want to reply.8·1 year agoYeah, I’m a grad student with limited funds and I contributed to the server when I joined last summer. I don’t really want to sacrifice this account, but if we can’t interact with anyone else, it kind of defeats the purpose of being federated.
Israel lost 0.014% of its population to the Hamas attack. Gaza has lost about 0.52% of its population to Israel’s rampage and that over 40% of those deaths are children. How is that comparable at all?
medgremlin@lemmy.sdf.orgto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Instagram's monthly subscriptionEnglish4·2 years agoI’ve had it for years and one of the biggest features that I find worthwhile is being able to easily download videos to watch on the plane or play like podcasts when I’m driving. When I first got it, I had a really long commute, so being able to download stuff and play it with my phone screen off is helpful.
Given that there is the workaround of using the other screen and the Surface Duo 2 is probably not a very common device, I’d say that if there isn’t a straightforward solution to not worry about it.
The “more options” does not work on posts on the right screen, it does work on the left screen.
I don’t think I did. When they do work on the left screen I think they’re different than I remember.
I’m not really sure. It’s been doing this for about 2 weeks now, but I don’t recall if there was an associated update as I don’t remember exactly when it started. That’s why I was hoping to find someone else having the same problem to look for correlations.
Version 0.0.49, Android Version 12, Surface Duo 2
To be fair, it is a service/website that sows discord in American society.

I’ve seen more ads for alcohol than ever in my lifeEnglish4·2 years agoSomething I’ve seen at some restaurants (ranging from casual to Michelin star) is the increasing prevalence of mocktails. If you mix non-alcoholic ingredients with the same kind of style and objective as mixed drinks, you can make some really tasty stuff.

I’ve seen more ads for alcohol than ever in my lifeEnglish3·2 years agoIf you’re still looking for resources (particularly if you are needing non-religious resources) a lot of health systems have outpatient programs and support groups for various substance use disorders, so that would be a good place to look. Depending on how severe the problem is, presenting an open and non-judgemental front regarding medical intervention and medication use can help reduce the stigma of getting chemical help for a chemical problem.
medgremlin@lemmy.sdf.orgto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Researching alcohol interventions for a friend. I’ve seen more ads for alcohol than ever in my lifeEnglish13·2 years agoUnfortunately, the medications that help with alcohol withdrawal are somewhat dangerous in their own right and need to be fairly tightly controlled. Delirium tremens (the shakes) from withdrawal are usually managed with benzodiazepines like Valium for emergent use and Ativan for prolonged control. The other main maintenance drug for alcohol withdrawal is Librium, and that one is also a benzodiazepine. It would be amazing if there were safe OTC options, but because of the serious damage alcohol does and the dangerous nature of withdrawal from it, it really needs to be closely medically managed. Opiate withdrawal sucks…alcohol withdrawal can very easily kill you outright.

I can charge my phone and small tablet to full close to 20 times before it needs to be recharged, and it holds its charge just about perfectly between uses.

I used to really like Trader Joe’s; their products are pretty high quality for not outrageous prices…but I can’t stand anti-union bullshit like this. I guess I need to really restrict my grocery shopping to pretty much just Aldi and Costco in terms of companies that seem to treat their employees reasonably well.
It’s a very different answer from the others here, but Psychonauts 2 is gorgeous. The animation is incredible and the visual design is totally unique.
Here’s a video that talks about some of the animation and cinematography in Psychonauts 2: https://youtu.be/dnbb5pcaSr4
It was a legitimately nonprofit hospital and he probably was overpaid, but at least he was a practicing physician at one point and did seem to give a damn about his staff.
