Building from source is always going to come with complications. That’s why most people don’t do it. A docker compose file that ‘just’ downloads the stable release from a repo and starts running is dramatically more simple than cross-referencing all your services to make sure there are no dependency conflicts.
There’s an added layer of complexity under the hood to simplify the common use case.

I’m not saying it doesn’t suck but SNES games were over $100 adjusted. It’s kind of crazy game prices have been inflation proof for ~2 decades.

Yes. Even with Plex I’ve had people just never log in. Or after I log them in and set it as a favorite they just never go to the unfamiliar icon.
Most of the problem isn’t even Plex/Jellyfin/etc.'s fault, it’s that the UI of smart tvs is a nightmare hellscape running on underpowered hardware and people just want to interact with it as little as possible. The absolute best thing would be to copy Netflix/Disney/etc and throw a QR code on the screen to sidestep that by throwing authentication to the phone.
There’s always Tasker.
It’s stupidly powerful once you get used to how it works, even without root, and it can definitely patch into the default “share” functionality.

There are self-hosted things a lot like it. Vivaldi and some other browsers have similar functionality. Not sure about downloading the videos, but there are other tools for that.

Switching to Starship, which is designed to get to space as fast as possible to beat their competition, is not better. Even if there weren’t a conflict of interest the size of Jupiter.
The NASA moonshot has been choosing hardware that will do what is asked of it every time and has known failure modes and fixes. Not the shiny new thing. That’s a good thing.
Starship or it’s successors may in the future be a good option. For the first experimental mission(s) it’s a ship designed for LEO and should not be pointed at the moon just because it is also rocket shaped.
Going to the moon should use technology that is tried and tested.
Another “Apollo 13” happening because the new strategy is “move fast and break things” won’t have the same happy ending.
You shouldn’t throw out all your hammers just because they were designed a “too long” ago. Some tools are fit for purpose.
And a 4tb SSD is the same price as a 16tb HDD.
If that trend continues, when you get to a 100tb of SSD(s) the equivalently priced HDD(s) will have 100x the capacity.
They do, but I’ve also seen it the other way around, where the price on Amazon is the price on the manufacturers site plus shipping. Usually for more reputable/niche products. IFixit I would’ve thought would be big/popular enough to do that but I guess not.
IFixit is generally good quality/value in my experience if it’s actually them and not some knockoff/drop shipper. Granted haven’t had a need to buy anything of theirs for years because the one I have keeps being great.
That kit is $40 on their site. Weird that it’s cheaper on Amazon in the first place.
The GaN ones are if you care about size and power. Their dock is basically a high quality laptop dock, and priced equivalently, plus it’s custom shaped to hold the deck.
For a deck that’s just sitting there plugged in all the time yeah not a big deal / worth it.

Primary use case is through terminal/web interface.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the touchscreen was a similar cost to a non-touchscreen at that size and they figured “might as well”.
Have used Linux for decades. Switched over full time a few months ago and have generally been happy but all your points are extremely valid.
Plasma will occasionally freeze the taskbar/desktop when it wakes up or I switch back to my desktop from work laptop using a KVM, effectively connecting a monitor.
For me that’s fine, manually open a terminal and kill the process so it’ll restart. For all but a handful of my extended friends and family that means the computer is broken until you log off or restart. It’s not a smooth experience.

They’re also not materially different from Instagram or Youtube. Singling them out as “the problem” is short-sighted at best.
Probably a me problem but kept having problems with that docker on unraid, it’s just in the community apps ‘store’. The vm seemed to just crash randomly.
I switched over to their B2 storage and just use rclone to an encrypted bucket and it’s ~<$5/mo which I’m good with. Biggest cost is if I let it run too often and it spends a bunch of their compute time listing files to see if it needs to update them.
