  • The answer is more complicated than other comments would lead you to believe. Before I get into all that, please know it doesn’t matter. Especially, when it comes to 14 year old kids who are playing JV sports at school.

First, the problem with studies is that there are very few trans athletes to study. Some studies have only one or two subjects.

Studies show that there is both an advantage and a disadvantage depending on what sport we are talking about and how long the athlete has been on hormones. Weightlifting and other strength based sports do tend to give an edge to trans women. However, cardio sports such as swimming and running put trans women at a disadvantage because they now have smaller muscle mass for their larger frames.

To me, it doesn’t matter. The camaraderie and other things that kids get out of sports is more important than who wins and who loses.

  • Yeah that’s the point I was trying to make but it’s clear to me now, I was sounding anti-trans women in sports.

I was saying there are contexts when cis women perform better than trans women and vice versa. Depends on so many things like the sport and the people involved that you can’t just outright ban trans people from sports.

Also, there are so few trans people in sports that they aren’t able to get quality studies done. If there are that few people, why are conservatives spending time trying to harm the trans community? Just leave them alone. They are humans too.

  • No, I’m saying we should just allow them to play sports because they’re human just like us.

I’m just saying there is basically no data and there are certain sports where cis women have an advantage of trans women, just as there are sports where it’s the opposite.

I think it’s important to make decisions with factual data and be honest up front. If I tell someone studies show I’m right and then you later find out that I was only talking about one random study with 1 woman, they’re less likely to believe me, if if what I said was valid.

  • I agree with most of your post. And also, I want to be clear that I support trans people participating in sports.

The problem with studies is that there is literally no data. This is such a statistically insignificant problem there isn’t enough data to go on. There were like 20 trans athletes in total for one of the larger studies.

The data we do have shows mixed results. Trans women tend to perform better in sports that require physical strength, such as weightlifting.

They do not perform better than cis women in cardio events such as running and swimming. Their smaller muscle mass can’t keep up with the larger frame.

Regardless, I think the value that comes from participating in sports is too important to not let them play.

A lot of the bans of trans kids in sports seem to be happening at the age where sports are co-ed so the whole thing is fucking stupid. Just let people play sports.

EDIT: Me: “I’m trying to say I support the trans community and want them in sports.”

Everyone else: “why do you hate trans people?”

Like are we so angry at the world that we instinctively yell at people agreeing with us?

That used to happen to me. I found I could only listen to audio books if I was doing something else to use up some extra “processing resources.”

I would describe it to other people as an overloaded circuit. If I applied all my brain power at the book, it would overload and shutoff.

If I was doing some tedious task that required some attention, but not too much, I could divert some of that excess energy away without overloading it. So for me that was, stocking shelves at work, doing the dishes, folding laundry, etc.

Driving wasn’t enough so I couldn’t listen to the book. (Though, later, I did train myself to and now I can do it fine)
