That’s true! I supposed it would be more precise to say that all processes are files loaded to memory, but not all files loaded to memory are processes. Sort of like the whole arachnids / spiders situation.

I’d call that a file loaded to memory
whatwhatwhatwhat@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•With the recent happenings with Synology/Plex, I’ve decided it’s time to make the move and up my self-hosting game, just need some input from the veterans to solidify my plan and put it into action.English33·1 month agoAs I assume most of you are aware
I most certainly was not! After some searching, I found an article about Synology’s new restrictions on which hard drives can be used in Synology’s NASs.
A few important notes:
- This is a completely bullshit decision on Synology’s part. Unacceptable, and a total overreach.
- This only applies to new DiskStation/RackStation models, so if you already have yours, you should be fine — as far as I can tell.
- The internet has responded with a “hack” already: https://github.com/007revad/Synology_HDD_db?utm_source=syndication&pubDate=20250505
A prediction: This is a scream test. Within a month, Synology will walk this back. They’ll make some excuse about it taking time to test other hard drive brands for compatibility. They’ll claim that they never intended to prevent you from using whatever hard drives you want, that they just needed to make 100% sure everything was perfect first, and that they always had your best interests at heart.
This will all be a lie, of course. The real plan is to measure how loud their biggest customers scream about this change. And then, maybe a year or two from now, they’ll quietly update a user agreement or a warranty document to reduce coverage for NASs that use third-party hard drives. Maybe they’ll add some extra “safety features” to DSM for third-party hard drives (of course with the intention of keeping you safe) that will cause a “minor” performance hit.
I’m sure that if you subscribe to DSM Premium for a reasonable monthly fee, all of your problems will be solved.

I maintain that this was made purely as an income stream for registrars. Every single company and brand should be rushing to buy companyname.sucks. Every town buying yourtown.sucks. Every political candidate getting into bidding wars over candidate.sucks or opponent.sucks.

In my town they get blown into piles by the wind and end up clogging all the storm drains, so the town is pretty strict on clearing leaves from your yard.
I compost mine over the winter, and then I have fresh fertilizer for trees in the spring. But most people just have a dozen trash bags in their yard until garbage day. Too bad.

One good sign is that banks are lowering their rates for longer term CDs. I’m seeing 1 year CDs in the 6% range, but a 5 year CD is more like 2%-3%. This means that the banks expect the fed to lower rates in the next few years.

whatwhatwhatwhat@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.ml•Hospitals have special protection under the rules of war. Why are they in the crosshairs in Gaza?132·2 years agoYou know, I was trying to tread lightly, lest the Zionist apologists show up to try and redefine “genocide”.
But the reality is this:
- Tens of thousands of civilians are being murdered (shot, bombed, starved, water supply poisoned) by Israel’s military.
- Israel is an ethnostate which believes that their race makes them god’s chosen people.
- One of the Israeli government cabinet members has declared that the Palestinians in Gaza must be eradicated, and that he would drop a nuclear bomb on Gaze if he could.
When you use the U.N.’s definition of genocide (“acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”), the picture is pretty clear.

Realistically, a scenario in which you could be sure that it was safe to go through an intersection at those speeds is going to be very rare, even if you had a green light. There are just too many variables.
Death Cab for Cutie is my favorite by far. I’ve seen them live 4 times.
I’ve also seen their frontman perform solo twice, and once more with his other project the Postal Service.
